Luffa Seeds
Luffa Seeds
Growing your own luffa sponges isn’t just fun, it’s rewarding! I have been growing for a few years now and here are my favorite things about growing luffa sponges:
1. They create the prettiest flowers that I hummingbirds love!
2. They are pretty fast growers and do not require a ton of work.
3. Harvesting the seeds at harvest time is so fun! Shake them like maracas!
4. Luffa save you money on sponges and plastic luffas (that fall apart way too fast!)
This year I only planted 3 seeds in my garden along my fence line and I am projected to have 30+ Luffa gourds this year! They can be planted anywhere in the summer months, but they have an extra long season here in Central Louisiana.
Since starting to grow luffas and sharing them with friends so many are shocked to find out that luffas are actually grown in the ground and not a sponge from the sea! They are also known as Loofah, Luffa Gourd, Elephant Okra, Chinese Okra, Sponge Gourd.
I use my luffa in the shower and make homemade soaps that have been a big hit with my family and friends. I also use them to scrub the sink after my kids get their toothpaste all over it. LOL
Luffa can actually be consumed when harvested early, I haven’t tried yet but they say you can cook them up like you would any other squash.
It is best to wait for the Luffas to turn brown on the vine. When you shake and can hear the seeds, that’s music to my ears!! Like I said, SO fun to harvest!!
Packages come with 25 seeds ( I typically add a couple more for safe measure;) ) Seeds will be shipped as first class mail. This means no tracking but saves you money!! If you have any other questions or concerns please contact me!
